the theory that women were dependent upon men to bring home the bacon for them and for their offspring has holes in it. i think women and men have co-evolved in constantly mutuallly beneficial fashion. in a hunter-gatherer society where men provide the protein, women provided vitamins in the form of roots and berries that they surely shared with their men.
Love is as important in evolutionary history as sex is.
Women, whether or not they are aware of their own fertility certainly act differently at different times of their cycle. I think we are aware of our own fertility to some degree....("concealed"
ovulation),

men are not interested in sex "all the time" any more than females, there are many things influencing and this would have been true throughout evolutionary history - scarcity of food, amount of kids around, pretty flowers, excitement etc.
pheromones in humans (the latest opinions)
the low-testosterone men probably end up having more children (witness men with hairless chests and faces) they prolly have more chances, and prolly are better off and survive more (at least in an agricultural society.
