Two young cats playfought together in the middle of the street, in the middle of the night. If they were fully grown, they would most likely be engaged in a true battle over territory or females (what *do* cats fight about?) Human adults do partake in real battles, though usually with less scratching and howling. Human adults are also capable of much play. How did play come to be such an important part of human life? Play defines us. Our very lives are spent longing for the next vacation, donning sports gear and picking up paintbrushes, dreaming of fast cars and imaginary worlds.
