i hang the shirts that did not dry properly on the line of beads and ribbons that stretches across one corner of my room near my ceiling. they look beautiful, orange and blue, hanging clothes whispering reminders of another era. in another era. i imagine myself in another life, standing on the orange deck, hanging clothes of the clothesline at our old house as a teenager. the extra work is a joy. and it does not use the dryer. it uses the sun. i think of how people in northern climates needed dryers. i think now of how i watched the clothes tumble in the dryer at the laundromat and thought something similar. thought of how dryers enable us to wear more clothes. i imagine a life in the future, where i hang out my clothes once a week, once every two weeks...it seems like a joy. when one has few clothes, and wears them often, one does not even have that much laundry.
